Wink Black

November 26, 1926 — August 24, 2012

George Winfrey “Wink” Black, of Quiet Drive, suffered a stroke on Friday, August 24 and died peacefully with the morning sunshine streaming through his hospital window on Saturday morning. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, August 27 at the Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel, by the Rev. Darrell Sluder. Burial will follow at Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Sunday at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times at the home. He was born on November 26, 1926 to Howard Garcia Black and Fannie Ethel Barfield Black. He was the middle child of six, and was predeceased by his sister Ethel, brothers Harry, Charles, and Billy Joe. Wink’s wife, Willie Moody Black, the love of his life, also predeceased him. Wink was one of the best brick masons who ever lived, and he took great pride in his work. His legacy as a craftsman lives on in the wonderful brickwork on numerous homes and buildings that still stand in Lexington and neighboring counties. In 1949, Wink went to Raleigh and made history by laying brick on Cameron Village, the first shopping center in North Carolina. Wink served honorably in the United States Army in Korea at the end of World War II. Wink is survived by his brother, Roger Black, his daughters, Belinda Black of Raleigh and Jamie Collins of Wilmington, and his four grandchildren: Shea Riggsbee Denning of Raleigh and her husband, Edward Denning, Jim Brodie of Chapel Hill, Hannah Brodie of Raleigh, and Sarah Everhart of Wilmington. Wink’s three great-grandchildren, Harrison, Charles, and Kate Denning, were the delights of Wink’s life. Mutt, a loyal canine companion, brought immeasurable joy to Wink’s heart. Mutt survives but is heartbroken. The family wishes to express tremendous gratitude to Wink’s nephew, Kim Black, and his wife Susan, who helped, supported, and cared for him in ways and on occasions too numerous to count over the past several years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ, 1002 East Holly Grove Road, Lexington NC 27292 or to the Humane Society of Davidson County, P.O. Box 1791, Lexington, NC 27293-1791.
