Winfred Hilda Walker Byerly of Sylva, NC formerly of Fowler Avenue, Lexington, died Wednesday, October 8 in Skyland Care Center in Sylva. She was 87 Funeral services will be Saturday at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Piedmont Funeral Home with Preacher Clyde Akers officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Winfred was born on August 23, 1921, in Gaston County, NC to the late Hurley Walker and Leona Ledwell Walker. Winfred joined the Navy on June 21, 1945 and served during WW II, to honor her brother’s memory, Fairbanks Walker, who was killed in WW II. She was a retired employee of Lexington City School System and was a member of Wesley Heights United Methodist Church. After her retirement from the school system, she continued to work part-time at Wal-Mart for fifteen years. In addition to her parents, and her brother, preceding her in death were her husband, Forrest Albert Byerly, Jr., and a sister, Billie Robinson. Winfred is survived by her sons, Bob Byerly of Webster, NC and Tim Byerly and his wife Kathy, of Sylva, her daughter , Brenda Anderson and her husband Steve, of Sylva. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Nicholas Byerly, Jennifer Wilson, and Savannah Byerly, a great granddaughter, Josie Wilson, step grandchildren, Leanne Burton, Jason Shealy, Timmy Wilson, Danny Wilson, Billy MaGee, Scott Anderson and Jeffrey Gregg.
