Troy Odell “Cowboy” McElrath, 77, a resident of Troy McElrath Road, died Thursday, January 1, 2009 in Lexington Memorial Hospital. A funeral service with Military rites will be held Sunday at 3:00 PM in the Mausoleum Chapel at Forest Hill Memorial Park with preacher Clyde Akers officiating. Mr. McElrath was born September 21, 1931 in Buncombe County, NC, to Perry McElrath and Savannah Warren McElrath. He was a former employee of Dixie Furniture and he was of the Baptist faith. He served with the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division during the Korean conflict, serving as an Engineer with 823rd Engineering Group. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death was his wife, Ruby Cody McElrath, and a number of brothers and sisters. Mr. McElrath is survived by two sons, Perry McElrath and his wife Brenda and Greg McElrath all of Lexington, three step daughters, Joyce Needham and her husband, Mike, Linda Woodall, and Judy Lawrence an her husband Bill all of Lexington. Also surviving are three grandchildren, T.R. McElrath, Cameron McElrath and Colby McElrath. The family will be see friends at the home, on Troy McElrath Road, from 2 until 4PM Saturday. Memorials in Mr. McElrath’s memory may be sent to the Freedom Baptist Church, PO Box 1242, Lexington, NC 27293.
