Richard Thomas Phillips, Jr., 71, of Williams Circle, died Monday, April 30, at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended illness. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM Thursday, May 3, at Grace Episcopal Church, by the Rev. Dr. Tom King. Mr. Phillips was born June 23, 1940 in Davidson County to Richard Thomas Phillips, Sr., and Mary Shemwell Phillips. He was a graduate of the Augusta Military Academy and attended the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a lumber broker. Mr. Phillips was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and his chocolate lab, Buddy. He also enjoyed special times with his friends and family. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Rains Phillips of the home; his son, Richard Thomas Phillips, III and wife, Marie, of New Bern; his daughters, Foy Castleman and husband, Randy, of Stuttgart, AR, and Kristie Spier and husband, Vic, of Cumming, GA; and his brother, Lee Phillips and wife, Linda, of Beaufort, NC and their daughter, Jennifer Phillips, of Charlotte.
