Thomas Loyd Whitman ,”Poppy,” 78, of Small Town Road, Pink Hill, NC died Tuesday January 29, 2013 peacefully at his home. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Landmark United Pentecostal Church with the Revs. Kenneth Marshburn and Matthew Drake officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park with Full Military Honors at graveside. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 6-8 PM at Piedmont Funeral Home. Mr. Whitman was born April 22, 1934 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Loyd Thomas Whitman and Evelyn Phillips Whitman. Also preceding him in death was his first wife, Barbara Keith Whitman of Lexington, NC and daughter Kristine Lundie of Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Whitman was a member of the United Pentecostal Church and was a retired Veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was also a member of the VFW. He was a member of the Navy Reserve Association and served with the Onslow County Jail Ministry. Mr. Whitman is survived by his wife, Delores King Whitman; one son Jeffrey Whitman of Lexington; daughters Tina Hembree and husband Jerry of Lexington, Evelyn Marshburn and husband Rev. Kenneth Marshburn of Lexington, and Stacy Drake and husband Rev. Matthew Drake of Jacksonville, NC; one step- son, Wade King of Pink Hill, NC; and step-daughter Kimberly Huneycutt of New Bern, N.C.;13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren.
