In a life of 93 years, Addie Sue Leonard Rollins was born on June 24, 1928 in Lexington, N.C. to Leo and Edna Leonard. She was baptized and made a commitment of faith in 1 st Reformed Church (1 st UCC) at the age of 12. She was educated in Lexington City Schools and graduated from Lexington High School Class of 1945. She continued her studies at Woman’s College (UNCG) where she was a member of the Wesley Foundation Campus Ministry and President of South Spencer Hall her senior year. She graduated in June of 1949 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. In 1950, she and Don Rollins were married in the 1 st Reformed Church sanctuary by Don’s father, Rev. W.A. Rollins. While teaching in Durham City Schools, Don attended Duke Divinity School. She was a member of Duke Divinity Dames and served as its president during Don’s middle year.
Don began his ministry in the Western NC Conference of the United Methodist Church. They raised their family and served in his appointments for 40 years. During this time Sue taught in Statesville City Schools (Pressley Elem.) and Charlotte/Mecklenburg Schools (Marie Davis Elem.)
Sue and her family enjoyed their Gingercake Mountain cottage in the Pisgah National Forest of the Appalachian Mountains. Upon retirement in 1992, they returned to Lexington, N.C., joined 1 st UMC and the Koinonia Sunday School Class, served Meals on Wheels, Community in Schools “Lunch Buddy,” Altar Guild program, missions and other volunteer task groups, and tutored neighborhood children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bob, and her husband Don. Surviving are her children Ed and wife Gina of Lexington, N.C.; Valerie and husband Jimmy Goforth of Mount Pleasant, N.C.; Leo and wife Janet of Pittsburgh, P.A.; granddaughter, Jennifer and husband Matt Perry of London, O.H.; brother Sonny (Charles Bascom Leonard) and wife Raye of Lexington, N.C.; Jean Rollins of Mooresville, N.C.; her brother’s family and Don’s brother’s and sister’s families.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington, N.C. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at the home at 218 Williams St. in Lexington, N.C. from 12 noon until 1:45 PM before the service.
