Sara Mae Helmstetler

Sara Mae Burkhart Wood Helmstetler, 80, of North County Home Road died Friday, March 16, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Lexington Medical Center.A funeral service will be at 4:00 PM Tuesday at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Revs. Robbie Stephens and Darrell Sluder. Interment will follow in Yadkin College Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 PM until 4:00 PM before the service at the funeral home, and other times at the home on North County Home Road.Mrs. Helmstetler was born in Davidson County August 30, 1937 to the late Frank and Lena Mae Freedle Burkhart. A homemaker, she was a member of Mt. Tabor United Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Alfred Wood, Sr., and second husband John Helmstetler. Also preceding her in death were brother Billy Joe Burkhart, and sister Madge Jeroszewski.Surviving are son Thomas Alfred Wood, Jr. (Doris); and daughters Ann Burns (Harold), Tina Craver (Roger), and Karen Lineberry (Tim) all of Lexington; step-son Rick Helmstetler and step-daughter Terri Comer (Lee) all of Lexington; ten grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are special friends Tootsie Bivens, Barbara Weaver, and her special canine companion, Cody.  The family would like to thank Davidson County Meals on Wheels and Wake Forest Baptist Health-Lexington Medical Center for the care and concern shown to Mrs. Helmstetler.  Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 555-B West Center St. Ext., Lexington, NC, 27295.
