Sally Gretchen Griffin Shoemaker, 83, of Mize Rd. died Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Hinkle Hospice House after an illness of nine months. A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm Friday, April 20, 2012 in Lexington City Cemetery with the Rev. Eric Disher officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Shoemaker was born in Jones County on May 28, 1928 to the late James Bryant Griffin and Lela Heath Griffin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul “Shu” Shoemaker; son, James Tillman Shoemaker; brothers, Walter Griffin,Durante Griffin, Ralph Griffin and Wallace Griffin; and sisters, Iris Musgrave, Ruth Rouse, and Mabel Mills. She was a retired customer service representative for the City of Lexington and a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a Friend of the Davidson County Library, and enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, and spending time with her family, especially walking with her granddaughter Cassidy through her flower gardens. Sally was also one of the first tellers to work at Lexington State Bank (now Newbridge Bank). She is survived by two sons, Cameron Shoemaker of Lexington, and Steven Shoemaker and wife Debbie of Columbia, SC; daughter, Amy S. Lark of Lexington; brother, James Griffin and wife Kay of Kinston; sister, Louise Hill of Kinston; grandchildren, Chelsea Derrick and Stephen Samuel Shoemaker of Columbia, SC, and Cassidy Garwood of Lexington; and great-grandchild, Eden Rain Derrick of Columbia, SC. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292 ,or to Davidson County Cancer Services, 25 W. Sixth Ave., Lexington, NC 27292.
