Ruth Voncannon Smith

Ruth VonCannon Smith, 104, of Linwood-Southmont Road, died Tuesday, March 3, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. A funeral service will be Friday at 11:00 AM at Jersey Baptist Church, where she was the oldest active member, with Rev. Dr. Michael Collier and Rev. Morris Hollifield officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born in Montgomery County, NC on June 22, 1904 to the late Milton Filmore VonCannon and Cora King VonCannon, She had attended Elon and High Point College. She was a teacher and a homemaker, and had taught school in Guilford and Alamance County, before coming to Davidson County to teach. At her church, she had served as church organist and pianist for forty years, had taught Sunday school for fifty plus years and was a member of the WMU and the Senior Adult Group. She was a member of Linwood Extension Homemakers. In addition to her parents, preceding her in death was her husband of 60 years, Charlie Alexander Smith, Sr., he died on August 28, 1990, a daughter, Alice Smith Hedrick, her brothers, Paul VonCannon and Milton VonCannon, her sister, Annie Grace Frazier, and her granddaughter, Katie Koonts. She is survived by her daughters, Frances Koonts and her husband Tommy, Mildred Smith and her husband, Carroll, Cora Humphries and her husband Taylor, and Patty Hedrick and her husband Allen all of Lexington, her sons, Charlie Smith, Jr. and his wife Brenda, Bill Smith and his wife Gail, all of Lexington John L. “Pudge” Smith and his wife Brenda of Linwood. She is also survived by her stepbrother, Phillip Dixon and his wife Irene of Summerfield, 20 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 9 pm at Piedmont Funeral Home and also on Friday from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service at Jersey Baptist Church in the Church Multi purpose Building, and other times will be at their respective homes.
