Mr. Richard Lee Charles, age 85, a resident of West 6th Avenue, died Monday, August 27, 2007 at the home of his daughter, on Happy Hill Road. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 29 at Forest Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Nancy Krall and military rites performed by VFW Post 3074 Honor Guard. Mr. Charles was born February 22, 1922 in Davidson County to Burton Charles and Lola Foster Charles. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and 37th Infantry. He fought in the battles of Ardenes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Mr. Charles was a member of VFW Post 3074, American Legion Post 8, and Amvets Post 13. He retired from Billings Transport and was a member of Wesley Heights United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Sink Charles, who died April 6, 1998; three brothers: George “Buck” Charles, John D. Charles and Bill Charles; and two sisters: Gladys Charles and “Charlie” Roberson. He is survived by his son, Dick Charles Jr. and wife, Jan of Arcadia; his daughter, Susie Clement and husband, Jim of Lexington; his grandchildren: Jeff Clement and wife, Lori, Michael Clement, Leigh Charles Strickland, and husband, Bryan, and Jennifer Clement Beeker, and husband, Vann; and his great grandchildren, who called him “Nook”: Carson Clement, Preston Beeker, Olivia Beeker, Emerson Beeker, and Nathan Strickland.
