Norma Florrie “Butter” Smith age 78 passed away early Thursday morning at Hinkle Hospice House, after a period of declining health. To honor Norma’s request there will not be a visitation or funeral service. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Miss Smith was born Nov. 4, 1932 in Davidson County to Norman D. Smith and Florrie Lopp Smith. She was a graduate of Lexington Senior High School and was a 3 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force where she was stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. Prior to enlistment, she was employed at WBUY Radio in Lexington, where she was a copywriter and disc jockey. She hosted a 3-hour Rhythm and Blues show which marked the beginning of the Beach Music era. She later worked and retired after 28 years of service from General Electric in Princeton New Jersey, where she was a procurement coordinator & buyer of electronic parts for spacecraft. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Don W. Smith and a sister Earlene Walker. Norma is survived by a sister Elaine Marlowe of Thomasville; one niece; two nephews; one great nephew and two great nieces.
