Mary Auman Short

September 18, 1922 — November 19, 2008

Mary Frances Auman Short, 86, of Broad Street, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at High Point Hospice after a lengthy illness. A graveside service will be held at Lexington City Cemetery at 2 p.m. Saturday by Dr. Bennett Ramsey. Mrs. Short was born Sept. 18, 1922, in Lexington, to Charles Andrew Auman and Lizzie Ann Foushee Auman. She loved jigsaw puzzles, shopping, yard sales, telephone conversations with her friends and weekend adventures with her only granddaughter, Kristi. In earlier years, she enjoyed fishing and trips to the mountains and the beach as much as possible. She was an excellent cook and liked to make birthday dinners for family members, which was one good reason to look forward to a birthday. She was a tender caregiver to her sisters who passed before her, as well as to her children and grandchildren. She had very strong values and never owned a credit card in her life. She was like a second mother to her grandson, Shahn, and another mother to her son-in-law and former daughter-in-law. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she made it extra special for everyone she loved. She will be sorely missed by all who love her. Mrs. Short was retired from Dacotah Cotton Mills. She was of the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her spouse, Horace Palmer Short Jr.; her parents; four sisters, Shirley Spry, Dorothy Hallman, Tola "Boots" Wilson and Christine Lanier; one brother, Charles Auman; and five brothers-in-law. She is survived by her son, Keith Short, of Kernersville; her daughter, Marla Taylor, and her husband, Carl, of Lexington; her grandchildren, Kristi Short of Greensboro, Andrew Short of Wyoming, Shahn Sarwary of Charlotte and Corbin Taylor of Greensboro; and a sister, Eunice Beck of Lexington, to whom we owe enormous thanks for all her help and support. The family will receive friends at the home from 6-9 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday and after the memorial service. Memorials may be made to Crisis Ministry of Davidson County, 107 E. First Ave., Lexington, NC 27292, or to Hospice of High Point, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.
