Mary Pauline Smith Leonard, 87, of Alston Brook died Thursday, June 15, 2017 at the nursing home. A funeral service will be Saturday at 2:00 PM at Sheets Memorial Baptist Church, where she was a member, by the Rev. Frankie Matthews.Interment will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12-2 PM at the church before the service. Mrs. Leonard was born in Brunswick County November 3, 1929 to the late Elton Dunbar and Shellie Ludlum Smith. She was a homemaker and had taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was Nursery Director at her church for many years. She had a love for flowers, birds, and especially her family. Preceding her in death was her husband Garland Lee Leonard; a daughter ,Sylvia Leonard; a brother, Harold Smith; and a sister, Annie Ruth Little. Surviving are son Wayne Leonard (Paulette) of Lexington; daughters Elouise Seaman (Ken) of Charlotte, Janice Johnson (Bob) of Nashville, TN, Kathy Blanton (Earl) of Linwood, and Brenda Treadway (Steve) of Lexington. Also surviving are brother Lester Smith (Janice) of Chicago, Ill, sister-in-law Margaret Smith of High Point, nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sheets Memorial Baptist Church, 210 Cotton Grove Rd., Lexington, NC 27292.
