Mary Martin Hinkle (Mrs. Haywood Hinkle) of Marco Island, Florida, formerly of Lexington, NC, died Friday, September 18, 2009 at the Frances Georgeson Avow Hospice House in Naples, Florida, after a short illness. Mrs. Hinkle was born January15, 1918 in Leakesville, (Eden), NC to Lister Allen Martin and Jessie King Martin. She was a graduate of Meredith College and sustained a lifelong interest in diverse intellectual topics. In 1939, she married Haywood Watson Hinkle ,who proceeded her in death in 1992. Mrs. Hinkle's two sisters, Jessie Martin Harris and Louise Martin Philpott, also proceeded her in death. While living in Lexington, she was an active member of the First Baptist Church and supported Mr. Hinkle's professional banking and civic endeavors. She is survived by one step sister, Betty Williamson of Laurinburg, NC. Her sisters' surviving children are: Martin N. Erwin of Greensboro, NC; Betty Erwin West of Fayetteville, NC; Harriett K. Hilton of Beaufort, SC; and Marylyn Martin Hilton of Lexington, NC. Additional surviving nieces and nephews on her husband's side are Thomas Hinkle of Vancouver, BC; Ellen H. Sowers of Lexington, NC; Cynthia H. Lohr of Chapel Hill, NC; and Ann Gottlief, and Thomas Hardy of Atlanta, Georgia A graveside service will be held Friday, September 25 at 10:00 AM at the Lexington City Cemetery conducted by Dr. Ray Howell 3rd and Rev. Tommy Wilson. Following this service the family will receive friends from 11:00 AM - 12 noon in the parlor at the First Baptist Church.
