Macky Redwine

November 25, 1935 — September 1, 2006

Hal McLean Redwine of Washington DC died September 1 in Wilmington NC. Son of Dr. and Mrs. James Daniel Redwine, Hal McLean “Macky” Redwine was born November 25th, 1935 in Lexington, NC. After graduating from Lexington High School, he served in the US Army, earned an AB degree from Duke University, and graduated from the University of North Carolina Law School at Chapel Hill. After Law School, he practiced law in Charlotte, at the firm of Henderson, Henderson, and Shuford before moving to Washington, DC. For many years he made his home in Washington and Alexandria, VA and during that time served the US Government in several different legal capacities. During the Johnson administration, Mr. Redwine began working for the US Department of Justice. He rose to the position of Senior Counsel in the Office of Legislative Affairs. He remained at the Department until 1981. Upon hearing of his death, US Federal District Judge Pat Wald, who was Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs, said, “Macky was a veteran of the legislative world in Washington and was key to helping political appointees like me navigate our way around the thicket on Capitol Hill.” In 1981, Mr. Redwine went to work for the US Treasury Department as Legal Counselor for International Negotiations for the US Customs Service. In that position he advised on and negotiated treaties and agreements that helped stem the loss of critical technology to the Soviet Union and its Allies. Reached at his farm in Virginia, former Commissioner of Customs William von Raab said, “The only thing greater than Macky’s legal acumen was his charm. This was very effective in helping us over many rough spots in our dealings with the Soviet Bloc countries.” In 1989, Mr. Redwine retired from the Federal Government and lived principally in South Carolina and Wrightsville Beach, NC until his death. He is survived by his sister and two brothers: Teen Redwine Timberlake and her husband, C. H. Timberlake, Jr., Craighill Redwine and his wife, Helen Wright Redwine, and James Daniel Redwine, as well as his nieces and nephews: C.H. Timberlake, III, Camey Timberlake Dillon, Tricia McLean Welch, Mary Craighill Timberlake Brown, Daniel Redwine Timberlake, Helen Redwine Snyder, John Craighill Redwine, Jr. and James Daniel Redwine, III, along with thirteen great nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, September 7 at the Timberlake Chapel of Piedmont Funeral Home in Lexington by Dr. Lee Jessup. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
