Mabel Marie Harmon

Mabel Marie Staton Harmon, of Lexington, died Sunday, December 14, 2008 at her home. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, December 18, at North Lexington Baptist Church, with Dr. Robert Floyd officiating. Entombment will follow at the Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Winston Salem. Mrs. Harmon was born March 15, 1927 in Roanoke, Virginia to Carrie Lee Matthew and William Abner Staton. She retired from the US Postal Service as a Federal Hearing Officer. She was very active at North Lexington Baptist Church. She was married to James L. Harmon, Jr., who preceded her in death, as well as her sisters, Pauline Dodson, Lillian Howard, and Emma Campbell and her brother, William Staton. Mr. and Mrs. Harmon served faithfully on the Baptist Lay Witness Foundation of the Baptist Men’s Association, serving on their board numerous times beginning in 1987. They participated in many missions including trips to the Ukraine, Brazil, Trinidad and many states in the continental United States. She also served on the board of directors of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina from 2004 to 2007 and on the articles and bylaws committee for 2007-2008. In her local church, North Lexington Baptist, she served faithfully in many capacities especially in evangelism and the outreach program, to feed the hungry in Davidson County. She is survived by her sons, Jerry R. Harmon and wife, Sandra, of Germantown, TN, James L. “Lynn” Harmon, III, and wife, Diane, of Winston-Salem, and Michael Steven Harmon and wife, Claudia, of Pittsfield, MA; her granddaughters, Michelle Hollingsworth, Jennifer Jung, Kristina Harmon, Tricia Harmon, and Lori Ross; and ten great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 PM Thursday at the Church prior to the service.
