Jerry Lane Phelps, 68, of Shoaf Street and long-time employee of Piedmont Funeral Home died Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Novant Health-Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 28 at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Preacher Clyde Akers. Interment will follow at Lexington City Cemetery. The family will see friends from 5:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday at Piedmont Funeral Home. Mr. Phelps was born January 17, 1947 in Davidson County to Samuel Phelps and Pauline Tesh Phelps. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church. In 1966, Jerry began his service career at Piedmont Funeral Home, working for Casper Timberlake and Charles Craver, when funeral homes provided ambulance service. He remained a fixture there for almost 50 years and had assisted with thousands of funerals during that time. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Kenneth Phelps and a twin sister Mary Jane Powell. He is survived by his wife, Frankie Smith Phelps of the home; a brother Roger Phelps of King; several nieces and nephews and the Piedmont Funeral Home staff employees.
