It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James (Jay) Williams at the age of 82. He spent his final weeks surrounded by the love and support of family and friends, who remained by his side until the time of his passing.
Jay was born on October 4, 1942 in Lexington, North Carolina to George Sheldon (Shell) Williams and Lillian Peacock Williams. Shell was a proud descendant of Roger Williams, the founder of the state of Rhode Island. Jay was the beloved younger brother of Nancy Williams Smith, who preceded him in death, as well as his brother-in-law, R.B. Smith. After graduating from Lexington Senior High School in 1962, Jay continued his studies at East Carolina University before proudly following in his father’s footsteps with a career as a Salesman at Peerless Mattress Company. Jay married his high school sweetheart, Mary Elizabeth Miller, on December 19,1965 beginning the beautiful journey of raising a family together. Jay is survived by his wife, two daughters: Cameron Williams Miller of Lexington, NC, and Sheldon Williams Bae, married to Andrew Bae, of Pittsboro, NC. He also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren: Parker Miller, Owen Miller, Mason Bae, and Brooks Bae; his sister-in-law, Martha Ellen Smith; his brother-in-law, Thompson Miller and wife, Kristie; and lots of nieces and nephews.
Jay continued to enjoy a successful career as a salesman, working with various companies and selling everything from furniture to mattresses across the state of North Carolina. No matter where his daughters were living—from Raleigh to Boone—Jay would find nearby furniture stores to call on, always taking the opportunity to stay close to his girls. It was after his retirement, however, that Jay discovered his true calling as a substitute teacher with Davidson County Schools. In 2012, he was honored as Substitute Teacher of the Year, a recognition of his impact on the students of his community. Jay was most often found teaching at North Davidson and West Davidson High Schools, where he was affectionately known as “Tiger” by his students.
Jay was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church in Lexington, where he served faithfully as an usher and vestry member for many terms. He was honored to hold roles as Junior Warden and Senior Wardens, positions he took to heart in supporting his church community. Jay also proudly served in the National Guard in the early seventies, often sharing stories from his service with his grandchildren, who treasured these memories.
Jay had life long friends who he adored. Together, they shared unforgettable adventures—sailing the Caribbean, playing tennis, enjoying beach days, hiking, and gathering for weekends filled with good food and laughter. In his later years, he took up golf, a passion he joyfully passed down to his grandchildren. Jay, lovingly known as Poppy, found his greatest joy in spending time with his grandchildren, attending every event and milestone in their lives. His happiest memories were made at Pawleys Island, where they shared laughter, stories, and lasting family traditions.
Jay was best known as a sweet-natured gentleman with a deep love for animals and a knack for well-timed, witty one-liners that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His dry humor and perfect sense of timing made him beloved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Jay will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His kindness, humor, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
“And that’s all she wrote”- Jay
