James Roy Leonard

James Roy Leonard “Doc”, 79, of Lexington died peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, January 24, 2025. James was born on February 28, 1945 to Ina Mae Parks Leonard and Roy Allen Leonard.  He was a lifelong resident of Davidson County, graduate of Lexington Senior High School, and a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Tyro. After a 30-year career, James retired from Schlitz-Stroh’s of Winston-Salem. He served in the Army National Guard and was a proud member of American Legion Post 8 and AmVets Post 13.

James loved his family and pets, country music, spending time at the beach, and everything chocolate.

He was preceded in death by his parents and special parents-in-law and brother-in-law, Mildred and Hollan Nance and Marshall Dae Nance.

James is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Nance Leonard; daughter and son-in-law Lori and Eric Mann of Glen Allen, Virginia; daughter Amy Marie Leonard of Lexington; companion dog, Snickers; and other cherished family and friends.

The family extends their gratitude to the staff of Brookdale Lexington, Pine Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center, and Hospice of Davidson County.

There will be a private graveside service at a later date.

Those who wish to donate in James’ memory may do so to Sandy Creek Cemetery in care of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 4299 S NC Hwy 150, Lexington, N.C. 27295, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research(donations@michaeljfox.org), animal rescue organizations, or any charity of their choice.
