Helen Burkhead

Helen Layton Burkhead, 84 of Alston Brook, formerly of Goodluck Drive, Lexington, died March 21, 2011 at Alston Brook. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Open Door Baptist Church on Clyde Fitzgerald Road, with the Rev. Gary Gibson officiating. Interment will be at Lexington City Cemetery. Mrs. Burkhead was born March 7, 1927 in Davidson County to the late Walter K. Hill and Sarah E. Frank, Hill. She was a member of Open Door Baptist Church and had worked as a Loomer in a cotton mill. Her husbands, Fred Wilson Layton and Eugene Burkhead, preceded her in death as well as her step son, Jerry Burkhead; two brothers, Lee Hill and Bud Hill; and her sister, Inez Coates. She is survived by her son; Fred Layton and his wife Jane Ann of Mooresville; her step-son, Sandy Burkhead of New Jersey; her daughter, Mary Layton Briggs of Lexington; her step daughter, Betty Kearns of Lexington 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 P.M. at the Church prior to the service.
