Harvey Chancey “H.C.” Blackwelder, Sr., 89, of Mendota Avenue, Lexington died Saturday, October 09, 2010 at the Hinkle Hospice House after a serious illness of one week. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 PM at Second Presbyterian Church, where he was a member with the Rev. Bill Sosebee officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 3074. Mr. Blackwelder was born August 27, 1921 to the late Harvey Jacob and Minnie Ratts Blackwelder. He was a World War II US Army Veteran, a member of VFW Post 3074, and a member of American Legion Post 8. He retired as a butcher with Winn-Dixie Stores after 35 years of service and was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Lee Story Blackwelder, who died in August of 2001. Surviving are two sons, Harvey C. Blackwelder, Jr. and wife Lauren, and Richard L. Blackwelder and wife Doris all of Lexington. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Michelle Perrell and husband Scotty, Justin Blackwelder, Brent Blackwelder, Chad Blackwelder and wife Lindsey, and Zachary Cody; two great-grandchildren, Katlyn Woodall and Karly Perrell; and a sister, Ruby Ward. The family will receive friends from 1:00PM until 2:00PM Tuesday before the service at Second Presbyterian Church, and other times at the home of son Richard Blackwelder of Southmont Pond Road.
