Elizabeth Ann Holbrooks (Ann) passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025 at her home surrounded by family, friends and her beloved books, pottery, and artwork. Ann was born in Concord, NC and was the daughter of the late L. Brown Holbrooks, Sr. and the late Esther H. Holbrooks. Surviving siblings include L. Brown Holbrooks, Jr. and wife, Gene Ann of Concord, NC and Samuel A. Holbrooks and wife, Kathryn of Naples, FL. She also leaves behind Nephew Mark G. Holbrooks (Shalah) and Niece Lynn H. Robinson (Julian) both of Concord, NC and numerous grand nieces and nephews and her many friends, especially her Bracelet Girlfriends. Ann was a graduate of Concord High School, Greensboro College (BA) and Appalachian State University (MEd). She was employed by the State of North Carolina as an educator at both the high school and college level, with most of her 30 year career spent at Davidson County Community College in Lexington. She loved teaching and learning with her countless students with whom she shared her love of literature and her passion for independent learning and thinking. While teaching she was also deeply involved in the Women’s Political Caucus, served as president of the North Carolina Political Caucus and was a founder and president of the Davidson County Political Caucus. She was passionate about the importance of equal rights and opportunities for women, finding women to run for political office, and getting women elected. Following her years teaching in the classroom, she opened Tastings Wine and Beer in Lexington, where she drew people to her with her magnetic personality, inexhaustible knowledge about wine, and welcoming smile. Never a “wine snob”, she always told her wine students that the best wine in the store was the one they liked best. She could often be found on Friday afternoons offering toasts of celebration for special people or memories of her many friends’ lives. After retiring from retail, she held court in her garage most Fridays, discussing issues and solving problems of the day. Cheers to a life well lived!! Donations may be made in memory of Ann to either Project Potential of Lexington (www.projectpotential.net) , the Humane Society of Davidson County (www.hsdcnc.org) or the charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
