Obituary

Edna Ellen Evans Morris was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on June 4, 1942, to the late Edward Hassell Evans and Mary Elizabeth Evans (Brockett). Her love of the beach stayed with her throughout her life.

After moving to Lexington during high school, Edna built a life centered on family, service, and faith. Her passion for helping others began as a candy striper at Lexington Memorial Hospital, where her dedication earned her a Service Youth Award from the State of North Carolina.

Faith was an important part of that life. Edna and her late husband were members of Second United Church of Christ before joining First United Methodist Church. Edna had previously been a member of First United Methodist Church in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Her commitment to helping others continued throughout her life. She delivered Meals on Wheels, volunteered weekly at Lexington Memorial Hospital’s reception desk, supported American Heart Association fundraising campaigns, and served as a greeter at First United Methodist Church when needed.

Of the many ways she gave back, the Angel Tree and Christmas Shoebox projects held a special place in her heart. Giving to children locally and around the world brought her great joy. That same care extended to her family: while raising two children, working, and volunteering, later in life, Edna devoted herself to caring for her late husband and her beloved mother.

Along with her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Sink Morris; her sister, Mary Virgina Evans; her stepson, Alan Morris; and her son, Martin Edward Young, who passed away two years ago.

She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Elizabeth Young; her grandchildren, including her cherished grandson, Hunter Edward Young; and extended family in Wilmington, North Carolina. Ellen and Hunter hope to honor her memory by extending the same devotion and caring for others.

A memorial service celebrating Edna’s life will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. The service will take place in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, 301 S. Main Street, Lexington, North Carolina. Rev. Cheryl Skinner will officiate the service. Before the service, guests are invited to gather in the church’s Fellowship Hall from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. to share greetings and enjoy coffee together.

To honor Edna’s kind heart and spirit, the family request that, in lieu of flowers, you lend a helping hand to someone in your community.
