Douglas Wainwright McDaniel, 73, of Bedford Drive died Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a brief illness. A funeral service will at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frankie Matthews. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park with military honors presented by the Davidson County Honor Guard and the United States Navy. The family will receive friends Monday at the funeral home from 6-8 PM, and other times at the home of the sister Connie Trivette on West Old US Highway 64. Mr. McDaniel was born in Davidson County on July 19, 1942 to Paul Cooper and Lorraine Mae Scott Cooper Barth. A Veteran of the United States Navy and member of Sheets Memorial Baptist Church, he retired from Lexington Home Brands. At his church he was a former member of the choir, worked with the youth, and was the former scorekeeper for the Sheets Memorial Christian School basketball teams. He was also an avid reader and movie fan. Douglas was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Gooch McDaniel in 1994,his parents, his adoptive grandparents V.V. “Buck” and Mattie Mae McDaniel, and brother, Vestal Edward “Peewee” Barth. Surviving are his daughter, Anita Maria McDaniel Appel (Brian) of Lubbock, TX; grandsons Nicholas and Mason Appel; sisters Connie Trivette (Roy) of Lexington, Carolyn Jennings (Paul) of Maryville, TN, and Kay Caviness (Todd) of Leland, IL.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. The family would like to give a special thank you to Doug's friend and caregiver,George Gleave, for all his time and concern.
