Dayton "Duke" Lee Reed, Sr.

May 25, 1953 — August 16, 2025

Dayton "Duke" Lee Reed, Sr., 72, passed away on August 16, 2025, in Thomasville, North Carolina.

He was a man who dedicated his life to hard work and the simple joys of life.

Dayton was born on May 25, 1953, in Philippi, West Virginia to Clifford and Ruby Alexander Blake Reed. He grew up in a large family having 6 brothers and 2 sisters. Dayton's early years in Philippi laid the foundation for his strong work ethic and a man who found purpose in his labor. He attended Barbour County School before beginning his career. At the young age of 15, Dayton began working for the Railroad, a testament to his early dedication to working hard. In 1979 he moved to North Carolina and on June 26, 1979, he married Lillian Kirk, and they began building a life together. Dayton continued to work hard which led he and Lillian to own a catering business together for nearly a decade, showcasing Lillian’s ability to create and share good food. After leaving the catering business, Dayton returned to construction and building. He worked for DH Griffin Construction, where he continued to demonstrate his commitment to his craft. His life motto, 'work hard,' perfectly captured his approach to life. Dayton's hands-on nature and practical skills defined him. He found pleasure in the outdoors, especially through his hobbies. Fishing, camping, and simply being outside with his children and wife brought him immense joy. He also loved to sit around a campfire, sharing stories and laughter with his children as they all enjoyed Lillian’s cooking. These moments were the essence of his contentment outside of working.

Dayton was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Eddie, Gene, Mike and Charles Reed and Carl Cochran and sisters, Nelly and Maxiene.

Dayton's family was the cornerstone of his world and those left to remember and celebrate his life are his wife, Lillian Reed; sons, Dayton Reed Jr., Chad Reed and Kevin Chiffalo; daughter, Tina Hill and husband Dennis; and brother Jimmy Hoffman. He was a cherished grandfather to Devin Hill, Alex Hill, Dayleena Reed, Dayton Reed, III, Cartessa Reed, Chad Reed Jr., Chevy Reed, Brentley Reed, Chastin Reed and Jordan Reed.  The legacy he leaves behind extends to his great-grandchildren, Noah, Wyatt, Violet, and Walker Hill as well as the much anticipated arrival of a great-great granddaughter, Ellie Anne. He also leaves behind a host of extended family members and friends. His legacy of hard work, love for family, and appreciation for the simple pleasures of life will continue to be remembered by those who loved him.
