David Lee Heitman

September 15, 1916 — May 28, 2006

David Lee Heitman, 89, of Lexington, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, May 28, 2006. A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sheets Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member, by the Rev. Frankie Matthews. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Mr. Heitman was born Sept. 15, 1916, in Davidson County to Raymond Heitman and Bertha Shaw Heitman He graduated from Reeds High School, received a N.C. Department of Public Instruction certificate, attended Piedmont Bible Institute and was presented a certificate of accounting efficiency by Studebaker Corp. He married his high school sweetheart, Viva Young, on Sept. 16, 1938. During World War II, he was a radio and electronics instructor for the U.S. Army in the Skyland Signal Corps School in Winston-Salem. He worked in a number of vocations including textiles, furniture, radio and TV repair, a Studebaker dealership and auto body repair at Heitman Motors. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier. At Sheets Memorial he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William F. Heitman and Ira Heitman; and a sister, Margie Floyd. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Tamra Snider and her husband, Charles, and Robin McClamma and her husband, David; a son, Keith Heitman and his wife, Marilyn; 11 grandchildren, Chuck Snider and his wife, Mercer, David Snider and his wife, Stephanie, Drew Snider and his wife, Cindy, Tim Snider and his wife, Cindy, Jeffrey Heitman and his wife, Phyllis, Phillip Heitman and his wife, Missy, Mark Heitman, Jonathan Heitman and his wife, Maribeth, Jennifer McClamma, Amanda Thomas and her husband, Matthew, and Beth Ann McClamma; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley Rhodes, Myrtle Everhart and Vernell Sutherland and her husband, Charles; four brothers, Vernon Heitman and his wife, Mary Ellen, R.J. Heitman, James Heitman and his wife, Doris, and Rodney Heitman and his wife, Jeanette; a sister-in-law, Lois M. Heitman; and a brother-in-law, Roby Floyd. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Piedmont Funeral Home.
