Charlie Jerome Smith, 80, of West Old Highway 64, died Sunday, December 21 in Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. A funeral service will held at 2;00 PM Wednesday, December 24 in the Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Walser and Rev. James Messer officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Charlie was born September 9, 1928 in Swain County, NC to Fred Jerome Smith and Bonnie Snyder Smith. He was a retired Heavy Equipment Operator and was a member of Near Calvary Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a former Deacon. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death was his brother, Leroy Smith. Charlie is survived by his wife, Nora Welch Smith of the Home, six sons, Fred Smith, Charles Smith, Dewey Smith, David Smith, and his wife Doris, Robert Smith and his wife Deborah, and Rocky Smith all of Lexington, three daughters, Mary Coffey and her husband Don, of Clemmons, Brenda Smith, and Margaret Lawson and her husband Pete all of Lexington, a step-daughter, Jeanetta Scronce and her husband David, of Lexington, his sister, Sarah Poole and her husband Junior, of Denton. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Shannon Smith, Donald Oldham, Jr., Rocky Smith, Jr., Roger King, and Christy Smith, and 13 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8 PM at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times will be the home of his daughter, Brenda Smith, 301 Dodge Drive, Lexington.
