Marianna Sink Stoner

March 24, 1938 — January 21, 2014

Marianna Atherton Sink Stoner died peacefully in her sleep at Brookstone Retirement Center in Lexington on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 after three years of declining health. A memorial service will be held in her honor on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Grace Episcopal Church, where she was a member, by the Rev. Dr. Tom King. Interment will follow in Lexington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, and after the interment at the home of Page Onorato on Lantern Lane. Ms. Stoner was born in Lexington, NC March 24, 1938 to Charles Varner and Mary Howell Jacocks Sink. She is preceded in death by her parents. She attended elementary and high school in Lexington, where she participated in many activities, including basketball and cheerleading. She attended St. Mary’s College her freshman and sophomore years, then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She taught for several years in the Davidson County School System. Ms. Stoner worked at her father’s place of business, Fred O. Sink Printing House, for many years, becoming owner and manager at his death in 1977. Following its closure, Ms. Stoner was employed briefly in retail sales, then held teaching positions with both Smart Start and Headstart of Davidson County. She was active earlier in The Charity League of Lexington, The Lexington Chamber of Commerce, Meals on Wheels, and bridge and dinner groups. She will always be remembered for her outstanding performance as The Goose Who Laid the Golden Egg in the Charity League play, Jack and the Beanstalk, which was her favorite role. Ms. Stoner loved the Carolina shores, and spent many happy moments at Atlantic Beach and the Outer Banks. She enjoyed reading and cooking, and was an avid entertainer, to which her friends can attest. She adored her family, friends and students. Ms. Stoner is survived by her son, Paul Glenn Stoner, III and wife Jessica of Mebane; her son Charles Varner Sink Stoner and wife Joanna of Chapel Hill; and her daughter Mary Howell Stoner DiCocco and husband Fred of Hong Kong. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Rachel Grace Stoner; Jackson Charles Stoner; Miles Cleckley Stoner and Catherine Harris Stoner, in addition to several cousins and many friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crisis Ministry of Davidson County, 107 East First Avenue, Lexington, NC 27292.
